The last two Indiana class 4A Football State Champions may well find themselves in new territory when the season begins – atop the 5A standings.

Based on the success the past two seasons of both Columbus East and New Palestine high schools, both clubs have been moved up a class and will vie for a class 5A crown when the 2015 tournament rolls around. In 2013, Columbus East was the 4A State Champ, handing New Palestine their only loss of the year in the regionals along the way.  Last year, the Dragons returned the favor, handing the Olympians their only loss of 2014, also in the regionals, also on the way to a championship at Lucas Oil Stadium.

So two powerhouse programs are moving up a class, no big deal right? Well, maybe a bigger deal than say Cathedral moving up to 6A. Why? These are two public schools. Schools that are not in the metro area able to garner new talent with scholarships. Schools not changing conference or pre-conference opponents to meet a new need. Just two mid-size public schools, with giant programs… and juggernaut coaches.

New Palestine head coach, Kyle Ralph has as many state titles as he does losses as the Dragons skipper – one. Bob Gaddis at Columbus East has more consecutive Hoosier Hills Conference wins than some 1A schools have students,…and a ring to boot. No doubt…Talent has helped both coaches, but make no mistake… it has been the system, the total team effort, that has been the mantra and path to success for these two. Look for that pattern to continue as status quo through the regular season.

And come tournament time, well… Ft. Wayne Snider, Bloomington South, Terre Haute South and all…. be warned.  There are two new kids on the block.  They play to win. And despite their enrollment size – they’ll be sitting atop the rankings of class 5A. They’ll have an eye on you and on each other, all the while playing one game at a time – and working toward another regional showdown for the right to play for a championship.
